Cooling tower with turnkey service, including the dismantling of the old cooling tower
Replacing an ageing cooling tower is more than simply installing new equipment. It requires careful planning, technical expertise, and seamless coordination to minimise downtime and ensure long-term performance. In this project, Cofinair delivered a complete turnkey cooling tower solution, managing every phase of the replacement process—from dismantling the existing cooling tower and upgrading the piping system to installing and commissioning a new closed-circuit cooling tower—allowing the customer to resume operations with greater efficiency and reliability. The project demonstrates Cofinair’s ability to provide a single-source solution, reducing complexity for the customer while ensuring every stage of the replacement was completed according to the highest quality and safety standards.

The Customer Problem
In September 2023, the Cofinair Italy Service team was contacted by a leading therapeutic rehabilitation community located in Cormano di Rimini (RN), Italy, to assess the condition of an ageing cooling tower used to cool the engine of its cogeneration system.
The existing unit, which had not been manufactured by Decsa (Cofinair), was no longer able to guarantee reliable and efficient operation. Following a thorough on-site inspection, the Cofinair by Decsa Service team carefully evaluated the cooling tower’s overall condition. The assessment revealed that extraordinary maintenance would not have been sufficient to restore the equipment to safe and efficient working conditions. Replacing the unit was therefore identified as the only long-term solution to ensure operational continuity and system reliability.
As a result, the customer decided to invest in a turnkey cooling tower solution that would include the complete replacement of the existing equipment.
The solution: a new turnkey cooling tower
To meet the customer’s operational requirements, Cofinair provided a turnkey cooling tower service, managing the entire project from dismantling to commissioning. The scope of work included:
- Dismantling of the existing cooling tower.
- The disposal of equipment at the disposal centre
- Piping upgrade, including removal of the existing piping and installation of new connections to the manifold.
- Installation of the new cooling tower.
- Start-up and commissioning of the new system.
Based on the customer’s cooling requirements and the characteristics of the previous installation, Cofinair supplied a REF-C 005 closed-circuit cooling tower equipped with several optional features, including:
- Three-probe automatic make-up water control.
- Electric basin heater for ambient temperatures up to -20°C.
- Thermostat for automatic control of the basin heater.
- DecsaCOATING PLUS protective coating for both internal and external surfaces, finished in RAL 5014.
By providing a complete turnkey cooling tower solution, Cofinair ensured a smooth replacement process, reduced installation time, enhanced equipment reliability, and delivered a cooling system designed for long-term performance and simplified maintenance.
Project timelines
The project was officially awarded in February 2024, with delivery scheduled for the end of May 2024.
Thanks to the close collaboration between the Cofinair Sales & Service team and a certified service partner based in the Milan area, the turnkey cooling tower installation was completed on schedule, including the dismantling of the old cooling tower, installation of the new unit, and successful commissioning, allowing the customer to resume operations without delays. The successful completion of the project further highlights Cofinair’s commitment to delivering turnkey cooling tower solutions that combine technical expertise, efficient project management, and reliable after-sales support.
